Harnessing Natural Light: A Design Journey in Kathmandu’s Urban Buildings
In the heart of Kathmandu city, amidst the bustling streets and tightly packed buildings of Baneshwor, lies a raw space waiting to be transformed. As an Interior Designer who cherishes both technical precision and aesthetic allure, we took on a project that not only challenged conventions but also highlighted the beauty of natural light.
Upon setting foot on the site, we were drawn to a long hall with a duct running through its center. It was here that the vision of our client’s dream home began to take shape – a harmonious blend of functionality and beauty.
As designer’s, our search for natural light in the space came into play. Our only option to bring in ample natural light was the duct present in the middle of the hall.
Our challenge was clear: to design a living room and kitchen / dining area on either side of the duct, while ensuring abundant natural light flooded the space.
One thing became clear as we got deeper into the design process: conventional transparent dividers would not be adequate. We needed something new, something that would improve the space’s visual appeal while simultaneously letting light flood it.
And so, the concept of a three-sided transparent partition was born. This creative solution would channel light from multiple angles, illuminating both the living room and kitchen/dining area with a warm, inviting glow.
But we didn’t stop there. To add depth and character to the design, we designed two distinct partition styles. For the living room, we chose a small framed frosted glass partition—an elegant touch that gave the area a more sophisticated feel. Conversely, we adopted the modern trend of fluted glass, which not only added visual appeal and texture but also blended in perfectly with the overall design scheme.
Our expectation was high as the project got closer to its finish. Various questions started to float in our minds. Would the customer be satisfied with our design choices? Would the room really turn out the way we had imagined?
With the final reveal, it exceeded all expectations. The partition not only fulfilled its practical purpose, allowing natural light to flood the space, but it also became a focal point.
Perhaps the most satisfying moment for us was seeing the joy on our client’s faces. They were fascinated with the partition and how it transformed their home, creating a bright and uplifting atmosphere that they only dreamed of.
The project serves as a reminder of the transformative power of design. In a city where space is limited and natural light is a precious commodity, we proved that with creativity, even the most challenging spaces can be transformed into an oasis of light and beauty.
